Right now, there is no vaccine that can prevent someone who is HIV negative
from becoming infected. But imagine if there were.

HIV research has provided treatment options for people who are already infected that help them to manage the disease and lead robust lives . This month's clinical trials section feature research for a vaccine to help future generations live without concern for HIV infection. There is no vaccine yet, but healthy, HIV-negative (not infected) persons ages 18-50 are participating in research to find a shot that will offer protection. The products being tested do not include the virus or any part of the virus. And these study vaccines cannot cause HIV infection.

The development of a preventive vaccine, as part of a comprehensive response to HIV that includes treatment and prevention, will be our best hope for ending this pandemic. Vaccines have ended smallpox epidemics, have nearly eliminated polio and have drastically reduced the incidence of infectious diseases like measles in the U.S.

In order for a HIV preventive vaccine to work for all individuals, diverse populations must be included in clinical trials. Participants in studies to test new products are provided counseling, condoms and other tools to prevent infection as these are only study vaccines.

Several organizations are conducting studies. The HIV Vaccine Trials Network (HVTN) is conducting the largest trial involving African-Americans. HVTN recognizes we need a vaccine that will work worldwide. There's only one way to find one that will work for everyone: Volunteers from every racial and ethnic community need to be involved.
